30 Days of Thanks - Day Seven

I love Nantucket. One of the things that makes my little island so lovely, is the Atheneum - which is fancy for library. Today, I am grateful for the library. (Which my grandfather helped renovate, by the way!)
Atheneum is defined as "literary or scientific association for the promotion of learning." The Nantucket Atheneum certainly strives to fit into that definition.
This is the elephant Magdalena made at their free craft activity the other day. (And free certainly fits into No Spend November!) Not too many places would provide a free art class / story time.
The librarian read Elmer the Elephant and then we made our own patchwork versions of Elmer by gluing squares of tissue paper onto plain paper, then cutting out the elephant shape. So cute! And the book is a must read, for anyone with toddlers. Like, seriously.
An abstract Elmer!
There have been so many times where I haven't had anything else to do, or it's been super rainy, or I just plain don't feel like doing anything, when we go to the library. Chances are you'll be able to attend a dance class, movie, or pizza pajama party. Even if you want to rent a movie to watch on a stormy day!
Magdalena gets so excited when she hears we're going to the library. It's something invaluable to this community, and we all love.
Magdalena making her masterpiece.
Elephants on parade!
That's what I'm thankful for today. What about you?

Thirty Days of Thanks - Day Six

Today is election day. I am thankful for the fact that we live in a country in which all citizens are allowed to vote.
Today, my brother is also leaving the country. To go to Afghanistan, to go to war.
Yes, I am grateful we can vote. But I am more grateful for the people, in the past, present, and the future, who have and will continue to fight and die for this country.
Whether you agree that we should be at war or not, (or even if you agree with the idea of war or not) or with our President's decisions in that regard, (and I am not saying one way or the other my thoughts on these subjects) it's amazing.
Amazing that these people, most of whom will never meet you or know that you exist, are willing to die for you and your country.
I am not very eloquently expressing my feelings and thoughts right now. My friend Catie said it this morning better than I think I could:
"Today I am thankful for my freedom. For the many women, men, and heroes that fought the hardest battles of their lives for my freedom, and still do. Without them, I truly am nothing and have nothing. These heroes have given me a life I could never imagine. Today I am thankful for them, everyday I am thankful for them."

That's what I'm thankful for today. What about you?

No Spend November

Yesterday, my mom and I took Magdalena to the library. When she was there, my mom picked up a book called Not Buying It, all about a couple's decision to not purchase a single unnecessary item for an entire year.
Doing something like this has been floating around in my head for a while, although I don't think a year is feasible for me - but a month, surely? And then, another month? And then, why not three more months? When the book came home with us, I thought it must be a sign.
So, after reading her and her partner's experiences, and having thought about for a while, I decided I am going to give it a go. Thus, No Spend November has come about, on the fourth day of November, 2012.
Now, what is necessary and what's not? Not such an easy decision as it seems. Gas should be necessary, right? Well, maybe. At first I thought "well of course it is!" But then, I live on a very small island, and nothing much is more than an hour's (round trip!) bike ride away.
But what about the days Magdalena has to go to school and it's a torrential downpour? Sleet? Hail? Meteors?! Well, you get it. So, yes. I need gas. But...what if I don't have to buy any during the whole month of November? The Rav is full up right now. What if I look at rides in the car the same way as I do what I am buying - do I really need to drive to my friends' house to feed their cats? Or can I walk? Do I have to drive Lena to school today, or can we bike?
What about food? Yes, it goes without saying I need food. Printer ink? Yes. Paper? Not so much right now, I have an abundance.
This is the list of what I have decided are the only necessities, the only things my daughter and I really need:
- Gas
- Groceries
- Printer ink (I have to print out shipping labels)
- Packaging materials and shipping fees
- Clothing
- School and school supplies
Yes, clothing. But again, only what Magdalena really needs. I wouldn't have included this item, but we're in dire need of winter pajamas and socks. I want to monitor my spending, not drastically devolve our quality of life, you know?
And groceries is certainly more broad of a term then 'food.' We do need shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and other essentials. But it doesn't include everything in the store - sorry, Magdalena, we don't need to get stickers today!
I love soaps. I don't need a fancy shampoo or face wash, or even bubbles in my bath. But I love soaps. The fancier, the better. I don't know what it is about me, but when I saw a display at the drugstore in town yesterday filled with mini winter themed scented soaps, I wanted them all. And I wanted to get them for all my friends, family, and pets.
Yes, soap is something we need. But do we need the most expensive, organic, lavender smelling bar in the place? I am going to be honest here, I don't know. I enjoy the smell and sight of them so much, and in the grand scheme of things, even the most expensive bar of soap in the grocery or farmer's market isn't that much. And as I just said I enjoy them immensely, and this experiment isn't about punishment or going without, per say...sigh...this one will have to be something I decide when the time comes...
But I think I know what my decision is going to be.
Now, what about yarn? I don't know the answer. I have more yarn than I can shake a stick at. I can make anything I want for myself or Lena without purchasing any. But what if someone wants a custom order and I don't have that yarn? It's something I think I may lose sleep over!
Let No Spend November begin!

30 Days of Thanks - Day Four

Today, I am thankful for camp-outs on the living room floor, and that I have a happy, healthy little person to enjoy them with. ('I not little, now I four! One, two three, four!')

That's what I'm thankful for today. What about you?

30 Days of Thanks - Day Three / Sunday Snippets

30 Days of Thanks:
Today I am thankful for being able to help a friend out by taking care of her kitties while she's in America:
This is Myrtle.
Who quickly got sick of my picture taking.
This is Keiko.
Who quickly got up close and personal.

30 Days of Thanks - Day Two

Whoa two posts in one day! It's happened before - but not often. And cheesy as it sounds, but the fact that I can get on the internet anytime I want, and especially right now (which means we were spared the worst of Hurricane Sandy) is something to be thankful for.
Amber at Au Coeur just started up 30 Days of Thanks, and I had to jump in with a post right away.
I am thankful today for early morning drawing sessions:
And for leftover pizza for breakfast:
Now I know that seems silly, but I just love leftover pizza, it's always been one of my favorite things in the world. Whenever I have pizza for breakfast, I know it's going to be a good day.
Wow, that's a lot to attribute to a slice of cheese covered bread.
What are you grateful for today?
