Simple Mitts

This is made from yarn I found in my local yarn shop, called flock, and I developed the pattern around the yarn. That’s how much I fell in love with it. Normally, I develop a pattern then go find yarn that fits it. This pattern is super easy, takes less than a skein, and a pair can be made in one night for the very dedicated knitter! Each skein is very different, so you're going to get a different mitt every time!

Yarn: Kureyon by Noro in any color way, available at Flock, Nantucket. Shown in color 319.
Gauge: 5 sts and 7 rows = 1 inch
Needles: Us Size four, or size needed to obtain gauge. Set of DPNs or needles long enough for magic loop.
Notions: Stitch holder, needle to weave in ends, tape measure, stitch markers.

Cuff/wrist:
Co 32 sts, and join to begin working in the round being careful not to twist. Place marker (PM) to indicate beginning of round.
Work knit (K) two; purl (P) two ribbing for one inch.
K for one inch

Thumb gusset:
K15, pm, make one (m1), k1, m1, pm, k to end of round
K two rounds
Next: k to marker (m) , slip marker (sm), m1, k to m, m1, sm, k to end of round.
Repeat last three rounds until there are a total of 15 sts between markers
K two rounds
K to m, remove marker (rm), put next 15 sts on holder or scrap yarn, rm, CO one stitch, k to end of round

Hand:
K all rounds for 1 ¼ inches
Work in garter one inch (p1 round k1 round) ending p round
Bo purlwise

Thumb:
Put sts from holder onto two needles. Pick up 1 stitch between needles, (side closest to hand) k to end of round. 16 sts
Next: k2tog, p to end of round. 15 sts.
Work garter for one inch ending p row. Bo purlwise

Finishing:
Weave in all ends, remembering to close any holes formed near thumb. Enjoy!

Coffee Cozy - free pattern

I had been looking for a coffee cup cozy pattern for fingering sock weight yarn for long while, and couldn’t find one. So, easiest solution – make one up! This cozy should fit small through large size cups.

YARN: Fingering weight sock yarn. The most important thing is it should be machine washable. I used yarn from the wonderful Storied Yarns – http://storiedyarns.etsy.com .
NEEDLES: US size four DPNs or circular long enough for magic loop.
GAUGE: 1” = 7 sts
NOTIONS: Tapestry needle to weave in ends.

INSTRUCTIONS:
- Cast on 62 sts, and join to begin knitting in the round, being careful not to twist.
- Work in K1, P1 ribbing for five rows.
- Knit five rounds.
- Next round: K1, K2tog, K to last three sts, SSK, K1.
- Next: K all sts
- Repeat these two rounds three times more. 8 sts decreased, 54 sts remain.
- Knit five rounds.
- Work in K1, P1 ribbing for five rounds.
- Bind off all stitches. I recommend going up a needle size or two for bind off.
FINISHING: Weave in all ends.

NEEDLES: US size 6 straight or circular
NOTIONS: Needle to weave in ends
GAUGE: Doesn't really matter
INSTRUCTIONS:
Cast on 50 stitches. Work chart, starting with five rows of garter border (K every row) and remembering to K5 at the beg and end of every row. BO. Weave in ends. (Remember, first row is the "right" side.)

Favorite Things Friday

I got an unexpected and very lovely day off today. As a single mother, I am very lucky. My daughter goes with her father every Sunday after church for several hours, and then one weekend a month. But today it was raining cats and dogs, and since my ex is a landscaper, he couldn’t work. Bummer for him – day off for me!
I cleaned the house, I worked on my website, I knitted. (I did not, however, actually finish anything.) Then at about two o’clock, I realized I hadn’t eaten, so I made myself a virgin Peña Colada – virgin mainly because I don’t know what kind of alcohol goes into it. And right this very second, I am sipping it.
All that, altogether, is my Favorite Thing Friday. (Well it’s still Thursday here, but hey, close enough.)
